Be Wary of Walkers

Street safety is the responsibility of everyone on the road, pedestrians and drivers alike. However, it never hurts to brush up on how to be the safest driver possible, especially when the pedestrians in question will be children.

• Be courteous towards pedestrians. Don’t block crosswalks when you’re stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn. Forcing walkers to move around your vehicle could put them in danger.
• As always, keep distractions to a minimum. This is advisable all the time, but especially important in school zones and around neighborhoods with lots of kids. Children are not the best at risk assessment when it comes to things like crossing the street or riding their bicycle around the neighborhood, so being alert and aware can save lives.
• When it comes to driving near a school bus, exercising caution is imperative—and it’s the law. Whether you’re driving behind a bus or traveling in the opposite direction, as soon as the bus stops and the flashing stop sign unfolds, you must stop. It is illegal to proceed again until the bus has begun to move forward or turns off the light-up stop sign. The ten foot radius around a school bus is the most dangerous, so stay alert and aware as students exit or board the bus.

These steps may be inconvenient and time-consuming, but it’s worth it to ensure the safety of our children, so budget a little extra time into your commute. It can make all the difference.
