2010 NIADA National Quality Dealer of the Year Named

Tracy Myers, owner of Frank Myers Auto Sales, was the 2006 winner.

Tracy Myers, owner of a Winston-Salem used car dealership, responds to the 2010 National Quality Dealer of the Year awards winner.

The 2010 Quality Dealer of the Year was unveiled last Thursday night at The National Independent Automobile Dealers Associations 64th Annual Convention and Expo in Las Vegas.

Paul Warren Claborn won the award, who was recognized during the ceremony with what is considered to be the most prestigious NIADA honor.

Claborn, who owns WholesaleCars.com in Albertville, Ala., has worked in the industry almost three decades during a career that started with him detailing cars as a high school student.

After earning the same honors from his state’s dealer association, Claborn was chosen from a group of 21 candidates for NIADA’s national honors.

To determine the winner, Northwood University provides a judge panel, which looks at various factors including how candidates have contributed to the industry and been involved with their respective communities.

“Since its inception, the National Quality Dealer of the Year Award has been the golden ring that all used car dealers strived to obtain,” stated 2006 NIADA National Quality Dealer of the Year, Tracy Myers.

“There’s no doubt that Paul and his family are as excited to have earned the right to be called NIADA’s Quality Dealer of the Year as much as me, my family, and my Team at Frank Myers Auto Maxx was back in 2006,” he added.

Looking at Claborn’s career in more detail, after detailing cars in his school days, he was able to open a home equity line of credit by working two jobs. He used this credit to purchase and sell vehicles via classified.

Claborn said he “was forced to start my automotive business” when the manufacturing plant where he was employed shut down.

And that he did, launching a wholesale business in 1981. At the time, he had just two employees, but would gradually build up his store.

These days, his company’s two locations — one of which just specializes as a Buy-Here, Pay-Here store — employ 22 people. Moreover, his membership in the Alabama IADA dates back to 1983.

Looking at his community involvement, Claborn gave Stepping Ahead — an addiction recovery program — a van, and has provided three local high schools with personal scholarships.

Claborn also takes part in jail and prison ministries. For the last three years, he has mentored a young fatherless boy.

“We live in the most wonderful country on the face of this earth. This country, like no other, affords us one guarantee, the pursuit of happiness,” Claborn stated. “It’s up to us as individuals as to how much effort we want to put into this pursuit.”

Frank Myers Auto Presents: “Beat The Dealer” – May 2010

Q: “Are there tricks of the trade that will help me get the most for my trade-in when shopping for a new used car?”

A: “Even though it’s a great question, there aren’t many tricks that I can share with you. There is, however, something that many consumers don’t know but can take advantage of. Many consumers do not realize that states often offer a tax credit when they trade in vehicle. For example, if you purchased a $10,000 vehicle in a state with a 6% sales tax and you did NOT have a trade-in, the sales tax would be $600 ($10,000 x 6%).

If the state allowed for a tax credit for trade-in’s AND you traded in a used vehicle worth $5,000 against this $10,000 vehicle, your tax liability would be calculated like this:

$10,000 Price of new vehicle
– $5,000 Value of trade-in
= $5,000 Price used to calculate sales tax

The 6% tax would then be calculated on the $5,000 and NOT the full $10,000! This means you would pay $300 in tax instead of paying $600. A savings for you of 50%!

It’s particularly important to consider the sales tax credit if you are thinking of selling your car privately. In the above example, you would have had to sell your vehicle for more money just to “break even.” If you factor in the expense of advertising the vehicle and the value of your own time, your break even point becomes even higher. The lesson to be learned? Don’t lose money by selling it yourself. By trading the vehicle in, you can avoid the hassle of selling it yourself AND you could pay less tax… a real “win-win” situation if ever there was one!

“Things You Will NEVER Hear From Your Mechanic” – Part 4

Frank Myers Auto Maxx Presents:

Things You Will NEVER Hear From Your Mechanic – Part 4
“You might be charged for work that hasn’t been done.”
It happens on purpose. It happens by mistake. Either way, it happens. Let’s say you drop your car off at the garage to have the fluids, belts and filters replaced. But the garage is busy, the mechanic who works on your car is a new hire, and the station manager hasn’t left very clear instructions. As a result, the belts never get replaced, but you drive away thinking you’ve got brand-new ones. When Gillis worked at the Department of Transportation in the 1980s, he says it was one of the most common complaints, and that it remains so today.

A good way to avoid the problem of work that was supposed to have been done but wasn’t: Ask to see the old parts. In some cases, mechanics can give you the parts they’ve removed from your car. (One exception is if the warranty requires they be sent back to the manufacturer.) “If you have a concern that a part was replaced when it shouldn’t have been, you should ask for it back,” says Mehl. (Rules vary by state; in California, for example, mechanics can give parts to customers.) California residents can contact BAR, and it’ll send a representative to examine the customer’s invoice and the part. “If it’s not faulty, we can take disciplinary action,” she says.

In addition, Robert Thomas (the Director of Service at Frank Myers Auto Maxx in Winston-Salem, NC) suggests taping to your steering wheel an itemized list of all the repairs you want made. That way the mechanic who works on it — in most cases not the person you talked to when you drove in — will have direct instructions from you.
